Spektrihäirete is a Finnish term that translates to "spectrum disorders" or "spectrum conditions." This encompasses a range of developmental conditions that share common characteristics but can present with varying degrees of severity and symptom combinations. The most well-known example of a spectrum disorder is autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which was previously diagnosed as separate conditions like autistic disorder, Asperger's syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS).

The core idea behind a spectrum is that individuals within a particular disorder do not all manifest the same symptoms in the same way. Instead, they exist on a continuum, with some individuals experiencing milder challenges and others facing more significant difficulties. This approach acknowledges the heterogeneity within diagnostic categories and allows for a more individualized understanding of a person's strengths and needs.

Key features often associated with spectrum disorders include differences in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. However, the specific ways these features manifest can vary greatly. For instance, some individuals on the autism spectrum may have fluent language skills, while others may be non-verbal. Similarly, sensory sensitivities can range from being highly attuned to certain stimuli to under-reacting to others.
