Spatiëringsregels, also known as spacing rules, refer to the conventions and guidelines governing the use of whitespace in written language, particularly in Dutch. These rules dictate where spaces should be placed between words, punctuation marks, and other typographical elements to ensure readability and clarity.

In Dutch, a single space is generally used between words. This is a fundamental rule that separates individual units of meaning. When it comes to punctuation, the rules are more specific. For instance, a space is typically placed after a comma, period, semicolon, colon, question mark, and exclamation mark. However, no space is placed before these punctuation marks when they appear at the end of a word or phrase.

Specific rules also apply to the spacing around hyphens and apostrophes. Hyphens used in compound words, like "woon-werkverkeer," do not have spaces on either side. Apostrophes, as in "vader's auto," also do not require surrounding spaces. Parentheses and quotation marks require a space after the opening mark and before the closing mark, respectively, but not before the opening mark or after the closing mark if they are attached to a word.
