In fiction, snavlets are often depicted as portable, self-contained units that can be deployed in unknown terrain to provide real-time localization and path planning.

Concept and design: A typical fictional snavlet is imagined as a compact hardware package featuring a sensor suite (inertial measurement, camera or depth sensor, and sometimes GPS), a processor for running localization and SLAM algorithms, a power source such as a rechargeable battery, and a communications link for data or control. In informal real-world discussions, a “snavlet” may refer to any tiny navigation module used in prototypes or demonstrations, without a formal standard.
