Smoothingtekniker is a manufacturing and quality-oriented technician responsible for creating and verifying smooth, defect-free surfaces on a range of materials, including metal, plastic, wood, and composites. The role exists in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, shipbuilding, and machinery manufacturing. Smoothing technicians interpret process specifications, technical drawings, and work orders to determine appropriate finishing methods and acceptable surface roughness.

Duties include preparing parts, selecting abrasives and polishing compounds, and operating finishing equipment such as belt grinders, orbital sanders, polishing machines, tumblers, and vibratory finishing systems. They perform grinding, sanding, buffing, blasting, or chemical smoothing as required, document surface roughness measurements, and perform inspection using gauges and microscopy. They ensure compliance with quality standards and may rework parts that do not meet tolerances. They also maintain equipment, manage consumables, and apply safety and environmental controls during finishing processes, including dust control and chemical handling.

Smoothingtekniker typically have vocational training in manufacturing, metalwork, or woodworking, often with an apprenticeship or certificate in surface finishing. Some positions require knowledge of metrology, blueprints, and quality management systems, such as ISO 9001. Entry-level candidates may start as general machinist assistants or finishing operators and advance to process- or quality-focused roles.

Work context can involve tight tolerances and potentially cleanroom-like conditions in electronics or aerospace, with adherence to occupational safety regulations. The role often overlaps with related surface processing positions such as deburrers, painters, and coatings technicians.
