Skyggekontroll

Skyggekontroll is a term used in architecture and urban planning to describe the intentional management of shade and daylight produced by built form and vegetation. It refers to controlling when and where shadows fall in outdoor spaces and on building façades, with the aim of balancing solar access, daylighting, and thermal comfort for occupants and pedestrians.

The concept covers both passive and active strategies. Passive approaches include building orientation and massing, roof overhangs, brise-soleil, fins, screens, and vegetation to shape shading patterns. Active or adaptive methods involve dynamic shading devices, such as motorized louvers and responsive façades, which adjust to sun position and weather conditions.

In practice, skyggekontroll relies on daylight analysis and sun-path simulations during the design process. Tools such as 3D modeling, energy simulations, and BIM enable designers to visualize shadows at different times of day and year and to optimize shading without sacrificing daylight.

Applications include urban planning to prevent excessive shading of public spaces, preserve solar access for photovoltaic installations, and maintain permeability of street networks for light. In buildings, skyggekontroll aims to minimize cooling loads in summer while maximizing usable daylight in winter.

Benefits include reduced energy consumption, improved thermal comfort, glare control, and enhanced urban livability. Challenges involve balancing shading with daylight quality, initial costs, maintenance of dynamic systems, and the complexity of retrofitting existing neighborhoods.
