Skolledare

Skolledare is a Swedish term that denotes the person responsible for the leadership and daily management of a school or school system. The role is most often understood as the school principal or headteacher, but the exact duties and job title can vary between municipalities, school types (primary, secondary, or independent schools), and governance structures. In policy contexts, skolledare can also refer to leaders who oversee networks of schools or district-level education offices.

The skolledares responsibilities include strategic educational leadership, quality assurance, and the development of teaching and learning practices in line with national curricula and local goals. They oversee planning, school improvement work, assessment and evaluation, staff supervision and professional development, budgeting and resource allocation, and the management of facilities and safety. Communication with students, parents, teachers, and the municipal education authority is a core part of the role, as is ensuring inclusive practices and pupil wellbeing.

Organizationally, the skolledare typically reports to a school board, municipal education committee, or equivalent governing body. The traditional title in many Swedish schools is rektor, but skolledare is a broader term used in policy discussions and in some contexts for leaders who may oversee multiple schools or school networks, including private institutions.

Qualifications commonly include a teaching degree and additional education or training in leadership and management. Professional development in skolledarskap (school leadership) is widespread, with universities and other providers offering targeted programs to prepare individuals for senior leadership responsibilities in education.
