Sinusproblemer, also known as sinusitis or rhinosinusitis, refers to inflammation of the sinus cavities. These air-filled spaces are located within the bones of the face, surrounding the nasal passages. When the sinus lining becomes inflamed, it can lead to a range of uncomfortable symptoms.

The most common causes of sinusproblemer include viral infections, such as the common cold, bacterial infections, allergies, and nasal polyps. In some cases, environmental irritants like smoke or pollution can also contribute. The inflammation causes the sinus passages to swell and produce excess mucus, which can block drainage.

Symptoms typically include facial pain or pressure, especially around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead. Nasal congestion, a thick nasal discharge that can be clear, yellow, or green, and reduced sense of smell are also characteristic. Headaches, tooth pain, fatigue, and a sore throat can also occur. Acute sinusitis is often short-lived, usually resolving within a few weeks. Chronic sinusitis, on the other hand, persists for 12 weeks or longer, often with less severe but more persistent symptoms.

Diagnosis usually involves a review of symptoms and a physical examination. In some cases, imaging studies like X-rays or CT scans may be used to visualize the sinuses. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. This can include nasal saline rinses, decongestants, pain relievers, corticosteroids, and antibiotics if a bacterial infection is present. Allergy management is crucial for those with allergic sinusitis. Lifestyle adjustments, such as avoiding triggers and maintaining good hydration, can also be beneficial.
