Silhouetteshapes are two-dimensional representations defined by their outer contour with a uniform fill, typically solid black, and minimal to no internal detail. The emphasis is on the object's silhouette—the contour that defines its recognizability.

The concept derives from traditional silhouettes in portraiture, which originated in 18th-century Europe and were named after Étienne de Silhouette. In modern graphics and design, silhouette shapes are created by tracing the outer boundary of a subject and filling it with a solid color. They can be produced from photographs, drawings, or vector outlines.

Key properties include high contrast, edge clarity, scalability, and legibility at small sizes. In vector environments, silhouettes are defined by closed paths and can be combined using unions or subtractions to form complex scenes. They typically avoid texture, shading, or interior line work, although negative space within a composition can convey additional meaning.

Applications span branding and logos, icons in user interfaces, cut-out art, sticker and die-cut design, and decorative graphics. Silhouette shapes also appear in photography as backlit subjects that render as dark shapes against light backgrounds. The term can also refer to a library or collection of silhouette shapes used in digital design and crafts.

Designers consider legibility, recognizability, and cultural associations when selecting silhouette shapes and may experiment with outline thickness, color inversion, or color palette while maintaining the silhouette's contour as the defining element.
