Siirtymähäiriöillä, commonly known in English as adjustment disorders, are mental health conditions that arise in response to a specific stressor. These stressors can be varied, ranging from significant life events like divorce, job loss, or the death of a loved one, to less dramatic but still impactful changes such as moving to a new city or starting a new school. The key characteristic of a siirtymähäiriö is that the emotional or behavioral symptoms experienced are a direct consequence of the stressor and are out of proportion to the event itself.

Individuals experiencing a siirtymähäiriö may exhibit a range of symptoms. These can include persistent sadness, anxiety, hopelessness, or a feeling of being overwhelmed. Behavioral changes are also common, such as withdrawing from social activities, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, or changes in appetite. The onset of symptoms typically occurs within three months of the stressor, and the duration of the disorder is usually limited, often resolving once the stressor is removed or the individual adapts to the new situation. However, if symptoms persist for longer than six months after the stressor has ended, other diagnoses may be considered.

Diagnosis of a siirtymähäiriö relies on identifying a clear link between the stressor and the resulting symptoms. Treatment often involves psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or supportive counseling, to help individuals develop coping mechanisms and process their emotions. In some cases, short-term medication may be prescribed to manage specific symptoms like anxiety or depression. The prognosis for siirtymähäiriöillä is generally good, with most individuals recovering fully with appropriate support.
