Signfocused is a design and usability concept that emphasizes the creation and evaluation of signs and sign systems to maximize legibility, comprehension, and navigational efficiency in both physical and digital environments. It treats signs as primary communicative units that must convey meaning quickly with minimal cognitive load, encompassing typography, iconography, color, layout, and contextual cues.

Origins and development commonly place the term in design discourse from the late 2000s into the 2010s, as researchers and practitioners sought to improve wayfinding, accessibility, and user experience through more systematic sign design. It draws on principles from urban design, cognitive psychology, and universal design to create sign systems that work for diverse user groups.

Principles of signfocused include clear glyphs and readable text, high contrast and single-language or culturally neutral iconography, consistent symbol sets, and redundancy of textual and pictorial information. Signs should be modular and scalable, maintainable, and responsive to different environments and user contexts. Emphasis is placed on minimizing clutter, optimizing placement and lighting, and supporting quick, correct interpretation at a glance.

Methods used in signfocused practice involve signage audits, field studies, user testing, and post-occupancy evaluations. Researchers may employ eye-tracking or wayfinding scenarios to gather data, iterating on prototypes based on empirical findings and real-world usage.

Applications span airports, transit hubs, hospitals, campuses, museums, and government buildings, as well as digital navigation interfaces, kiosks, and public information systems. Evaluation focuses on time to destination, error rates, orientation confidence, readability, and long-term maintenance costs.
