Technologies commonly involved include e-textiles with flexible circuits, LEDs or OLED panels, color-changing fabrics, NFC or RFID tags, Bluetooth Low Energy modules, and small microcontrollers. Power sources range from rechargeable batteries and swappable cells to energy harvesting options, with emphasis on maintaining wearability and washability.

Applications of signalsclothing span safety, communication, and expressive design. High-visibility or illuminated clothing improves pedestrian and cyclist safety. Outdoor and expedition garments may signal battery status or distress, while medical or rehabilitation wearables can alert caregivers to conditions.
