Sieniviljelmät

Sieniviljelmät refers to the cultivation of fungi, specifically for edible or medicinal purposes. This practice involves creating controlled environments where fungi can grow optimally, replicating their natural habitats with precise control over temperature, humidity, light, and substrate. The process typically begins with acquiring a pure culture of a desired mushroom species, often from a spore print or a sterile laboratory sample. This culture is then propagated onto a suitable growth medium, such as grain or sterilized sawdust, to create spawn.

Once the spawn is fully colonized, it is transferred to a bulk substrate, which provides the nutrients for the mushrooms to fruit. Common substrates include composted manure, straw, wood chips, and various agricultural byproducts. The spawn is mixed into the substrate, and the mixture is then incubated in a warm, dark environment to allow for mycelial growth, the vegetative part of the fungus. Following this colonization phase, the conditions are altered to trigger fruiting. This usually involves lowering the temperature, increasing humidity, and introducing some light.

The harvested mushrooms can then be consumed fresh, dried, or processed into various food products. Different species of fungi, such as button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus), shiitake (Lentinula edodes), and oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus), are commonly cultivated in Sieniviljelmät. The scale of cultivation can range from small home hobby setups to large commercial operations.
