Shorthairs

Shorthairs are animals characterized by a short coat length, most commonly referring to domestic cats and dogs. The term is not a formal breed category but a descriptive label used by breeders, shelters, and veterinarians to distinguish coat length. In cats, shorthaired individuals typically include domestic short-haired cats (DSH), a diverse, non-pedigreed group that can display a wide range of colors and patterns. In dogs, many breeds are described as shorthaired, meaning they have a close, low-maintenance coat that sheds year-round.

Coat and care: Short coats tend to require less grooming than longer coats. Regular brushing helps reduce shedding and distribute natural oils; baths are infrequent unless needed for odor or skin conditions. Shedding levels vary by breed, age, season, and health. Routine veterinary care, balanced diet, and adequate exercise influence coat condition.

Genetics and health: Coat length is determined by genetics but does not by itself indicate temperament or overall health. Shorthaired cats and dogs can be found across a wide range of sizes, temperaments, and energy levels. Some hereditary conditions may be more common in certain shorthaired breeds, but this is breed-specific rather than coat-length specific.

Examples: Shorthaired dog breeds include the German Shorthaired Pointer, Vizsla, Boxer, Beagle, and Doberman Pinscher. Shorthaired cats are represented by the domestic short-haired category, along with many pedigreed breeds that are also shorthaired.
