Shebears

Shebears is a colloquial term that blends “she” (or “her”) and “bear” to describe a female–identified individual who identifies with the bear subculture within the bear community. The bear community, originating in LGBTQ+ and specifically gay subcultures, celebrates larger and often hairier men, and has expanded to encompass women who share an affinity for the aesthetic and lifestyle. Shebears often participate in bear bars, events, and social circles that emphasize camaraderie, body positivity, and the celebration of masculinity and femininity in tandem.

The term emerged in the early 2010s as the bear community grew more inclusive and women sought linguistic visibility within the subculture. Shebears may be cisgender women, transgender women, or genderqueer individuals who feel represented by the bear aesthetic, which can include rugged or cozy fashion, natural body hair, and a relaxed, approachable demeanor. Community spaces such as shebear-friendly meetups and social media groups provide a platform for networking, support, and the sharing of personal narratives.

Shebears play a role in challenging rigid gender expectations; they embody a hybrid identity that defies conventional binary norms. By participating, they negotiate visibility in both bear and feminist circles, while often confronting fetishization and stereotypes. The subculture encourages self-expression and mutual respect, with a focus on authenticity over performance. As with other queer subcultures, shebears continue to evolve, reflecting shifting attitudes toward gender fluidity, body diversity, and inclusivity.
