Semotilus

Semotilus is a genus of small to medium freshwater fishes in the family Cyprinidae, commonly referred to as creek chubs. They are native to North America, with species occurring in streams, rivers, and occasionally lakes and ponds from Canada to parts of the United States. They tend to favor clear waters with moderate currents, often inhabiting riffles, runs, and vegetated margins, though some species tolerate variations in habitat and water quality.

In appearance, Semotilus species typically have a streamlined body suitable for life in flowing water, a single dorsal fin, and a lateral line running along the flank. They are generally considered small to medium-sized minnows, with adult individuals commonly reaching modest lengths; size can vary notably among different species and local populations. Their coloration is often subdued, providing camouflage against the substrate and aquatic vegetation.

Ecology and behavior: Semotilus species are omnivorous, feeding on aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, small crustaceans, algae, and plant material.
