Semiconductor-grade is a market designation for materials and chemicals that meet strict purity, composition, and stability requirements for semiconductor device fabrication. The term covers silicon and compound semiconductors, as well as the solvents, gases, dopants, and photoresists used in cleanroom processes. It is not a single regulatory category but a quality standard used by suppliers to indicate suitability for electronics manufacturing.

Purity is typically specified in digits of nines, such as 5N (99.999%), 6N (99.9999%), 7N (99.99999%), and higher. In practice, 6N–7N materials are common for bulk silicon, dopants, and most process chemicals, while some ultrapure precursors may require 8N or higher. Impurity control targets metallic contaminants (iron, copper, nickel, chromium, zinc), non-metallic elements (carbon, hydrogen, halogens), and moisture. Testing uses methods like ICP‑MS for trace metals and total organic carbon analyses, with lot-based certification and traceability.

Common semiconductor-grade materials include silicon wafers, dopants such as boron, phosphorus, and arsenic, high-purity gases (silane, phosphine, arsine, nitrogen), solvents (isopropanol, acetone, water), acids (hydrofluoric, sulfuric), and photoresist materials. Ultra-pure water used in wafer cleaning is also described as semiconductor-grade. Materials are supplied with strict lot traceability, packaging to minimize contamination, and delivery under cleanroom-compatible conditions.

Industry standards and expectations are guided by organizations such as SEMI and ISO, and supplier specifications often align with manufacturer or customer requirements and cleanroom compatibility. Although the term is widely used, actual requirements vary by material, device technology, and fab process, making precise specifications critical for procurement.
