Selluvillakerrokset are layers of cellulose insulation used in buildings, typically installed in attics, wall cavities, and other concealed spaces. The material is produced from recycled paper that is processed into a fibrous insulation product and treated with fire retardants (borates) to meet safety standards. It is commonly supplied as loose-fill and installed with a blowing machine, enabling dense, continuous fills that reduce air leakage and improve thermal performance.

Performance and advantages: Cellulose insulation generally provides good thermal resistance per thickness and strong acoustic insulation. Because it is blown in, it can fill irregular cavities and around obstacles more completely than some batt insulations. Its performance depends on density and proper installation; over time, some settling can slightly reduce the R-value.

Installation considerations: Proper installation requires trained personnel and equipment. In attic and external wall applications, it is blown to the specified depth with careful sealing around penetrations and along the eaves and joints. It should be kept dry, as moisture intrusion can reduce insulation effectiveness and promote mold growth. The borate treatment helps resist pests and fire, but it does not replace the need for a suitable vapor barrier and moisture control.

Environmental and sustainability aspects: Selluvilla contains a high proportion of recycled content and typically has low embodied energy, making it a sustainable option among residential insulation choices. It is often cost-competitive with mineral wool or fiberglass.
