Self-standards refer to internal criteria that individuals or groups set to judge performance, behavior, or quality. They are self-imposed benchmarks used for self-evaluation, motivation, and regulation of conduct. Self-standards emerge from personal values, experiences, goals, and cultural norms, and can be explicit, such as written guidelines, or implicit, embedded in habits. They are distinct from external standards like laws, contracts, or industry norms, though the two often interact and influence one another.

In daily life, people apply self-standards when deciding how much effort to invest, how to respond to mistakes, or how to communicate. In workplaces, teams may adopt shared self-standards for reliability, safety, and professionalism, while individuals maintain personal standards for integrity or quality. Self-standards can be adaptive, evolving with feedback and changing circumstances, or rigid, leading to cognitive dissonance if misaligned with external expectations.
