Self-audit, also called internal self-audit, is a process by which an organization assesses its own operations, controls, and compliance against internal standards and external requirements. The purpose is to identify weaknesses, verify performance, and support improvement without immediately involving external auditors. Self-audits are applied across domains such as financial reporting, regulatory and tax compliance, information security, quality management, health and safety, and environmental stewardship.

The typical process begins with planning and scoping to define objectives, criteria, and evidence sources. Teams collect data, test controls, and document findings against predefined checklists or standards. Findings are evaluated, risks are rated, and a formal report is produced for management. A remediation plan with assigned owners and deadlines follows, and progress is tracked in subsequent cycles to verify closure.

Governance and standards emphasize a risk-based approach, documented methodologies, and objectivity where possible. While self-audits can reduce cost and accelerate improvement, they rely on internal honesty and access to evidence; they should be supported by independent reviews or external audits for high-risk areas. Benefits include faster feedback, ownership of corrective actions, and better alignment with business objectives, whereas limitations include potential bias, incomplete scope, and the possibility of underreporting. Effective self-audits use checklists, keep auditable records, involve relevant stakeholders, and feed into broader governance processes such as risk management and internal controls.

Self-audits are commonly used in corporate governance, compliance programs, and quality systems, and they complement external audits rather than replace them.
