Seherlebnis

Seherlebnis is a term used in German-language religious studies, philosophy, and literature to describe a visionary or revelatory experience perceived by a Seher (seer). Etymologically, it combines Seher (seer) with Erlebnis (experience). A Seherlebnis denotes a subjective event in which sensory, symbolic, or dream-like phenomena are interpreted as revealing hidden truths about the divine, a future event, or ultimate reality. The experience is usually described as sudden or intense, with a sense of immediacy and conviction that can lead to changes in belief, behavior, or identity.

In religious and mystical contexts, Seherlebnisse are presented as the source of prophecy, inspired understanding, or communication from transcendent sources. In literary and philosophical discourse, the concept is used to examine inner illumination, creativity, or the limits of rational explanation. In anthropology and psychology, Seherlebnis is analyzed as a complex phenomenological state that intertwines perception, emotion, and interpretation, rather than as a verifiable external event.

Because Seherlebnis is inherently subjective, scholars emphasize its variability and cultural framing.
