Seasons

Seasons are the division of the year based on variations in climate, weather patterns, and daylight hours, resulting from the Earth's axial tilt and its orbit around the Sun. There are generally four recognized seasons: spring, summer, autumn (fall), and winter, although some regions experience distinct wet and dry seasons instead of or in addition to these.

The Earth's axis is tilted approximately 23.5 degrees relative to its orbital plane. As the Earth orbits the Sun over the course of a year, this tilt causes different parts of the planet to receive varying amounts of solar energy. When the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, it experiences summer, characterized by longer days and warmer temperatures. Conversely, when it tilts away, it experiences winter, with shorter days and colder conditions. The Southern Hemisphere undergoes opposite seasonal phases at the same time.

Each season has characteristic weather patterns and ecological changes. Spring marks renewal, with blooming plants and increased animal activity. Summer typically features the highest temperatures and longer daylight hours. Autumn involves cooling temperatures and falling leaves, preparing plants and animals for winter. Winter often brings cold temperatures, snow, or frost in many regions.

The timing and duration of seasons vary geographically, being more pronounced in temperate zones and less distinct in tropical areas. In tropical regions near the equator, the variation is primarily in rainfall rather than temperature, leading to rainy and dry seasons.

Understanding seasons is essential for agriculture, ecology, and daily human activities. They influence ecosystems, biodiversity, and climate patterns across the globe, shaping life in profound ways.
