The aim of scoreteknikker is to support the narrative, shape mood, and enhance pacing without drawing undue attention away from the story.

Key techniques include the use of leitmotifs and thematic development, where a recurring musical idea evolves with characters or ideas. Orchestration and timbre choices define the overall sound, ranging from full orchestral textures to sparse, intimate textures. Rhythm and tempo mapping align musical cues with on-screen events, while harmonic language—whether tonal, modal, or dissonant—helps signal tension, hope, or sorrow. Integration with sound design is also important, often blending live instruments, sampled textures, and electronic elements to create cohesive textures. Dynamic control, density, and the strategic use of silence contribute to pacing and emotional impact.

Workflow typically begins with spotting sessions to identify cue points, followed by thematic sketches or mockups, detailed arrangement and orchestration, recording (live performers or virtual), and mixing and mastering. Final synchronization with picture is achieved during post-production. Collaboration with directors, producers, and sound designers is central, and practitioners commonly work with notation software and digital audio workstations.
