Orchestration is the coordinated management of multiple interacting elements to achieve a defined objective. It emphasizes planning, sequencing, and control across components, often with automation and rules for error handling, scaling, and resource allocation. The term spans domains and varies by context.

In music, orchestration is the art of arranging a composition for an ensemble. It involves choosing instruments, assigning parts, and shaping timbre, dynamics, and texture to achieve balance and color. Effective orchestration guides how a piece is heard, adapting material to different ensembles and acoustic environments.

In information technology, orchestration automates the coordination of services, containers, and resources to complete a workflow or deployment. It manages dependencies, state, and lifecycle events. Container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes automate deployment, scaling, networking, and recovery of applications. Workflow tools such as Airflow or Argo coordinate data pipelines and business processes. API orchestration composes multiple service calls into a single operation and is distinct from choreography, where services coordinate without central control.

Other forms include infrastructure orchestration for provisioning resources with declarative templates (Terraform, CloudFormation) and cloud service orchestration for coordinating serverless functions and microservices. In data engineering, data orchestration coordinates ETL tasks and data quality checks.
