Schutzpolster

Schutzpolster, literally protective padding, denotes padding materials or embedded padding systems used to absorb impacts, cushion surfaces, and reduce injury or damage. They are employed in consumer products, sports equipment, medical devices, packaging and transport, furniture, and industrial applications.

Materials and forms: common materials include foam plastics such as polyethylene foam, polyurethane foam, and EVA; also rubber, silicone gel, and air-filled cushions; many products use multilayer or composite constructions and are covered with textiles or synthetics.

Applications: In personal protective equipment and sports gear, padding appears as knee, elbow, and shoulder pads, chest protectors, and interior helmet linings. In packaging, foam inserts and corner protectors cushion fragile items. In furniture and interior design, padding protects edges and softens joints. In automotive or machinery contexts, padding reduces vibration and protects components.

Design considerations: key properties include thickness, density, and hardness (Shore), as well as impact absorption, compression set, resilience, moisture resistance and cleanability. Compatibility with adjacent materials and mounting methods such as adhesives, Velcro, or mechanical fasteners are also important.

Standards and sustainability: compliance depends on application and jurisdiction; consumer and industrial products may bear safety marks or certifications, and disposal or recycling depends on the material and local recycling streams.
