This term, of Finnish origin, categorizes animals based on their primary feeding strategies concerning dead organic matter. While the exact number and definitions of "tyyppejä" (types) can vary between different ecological models, the general idea is to distinguish between animals that actively seek out carcasses versus those that consume carrion incidentally or as a secondary food source.

One broad category often identified is the "obligate scavenger," which relies heavily or exclusively on scavenging for survival.
