Scafoidfraktur

Scafoidfraktur is a type of fracture that occurs in the scaphoid bone, which is one of the eight carpal bones in the wrist. The scaphoid is located at the base of the thumb side of the wrist and plays a crucial role in wrist movement and stability. Scafoidfraktur is relatively common, particularly in young adults, and is often associated with a fall on an outstretched hand or a direct blow to the wrist.

The scaphoid bone is particularly susceptible to fractures due to its small size and the fact that it is not directly connected to the radius or ulna, the two long bones in the forearm. Instead, it is connected to the radius by a small ligament, making it vulnerable to injury. Scafoidfraktur can range from a simple fracture, where the bone breaks but does not penetrate the skin, to a more severe fracture that involves the skin and underlying tissues.

Treatment for scafoidfraktur typically depends on the severity of the injury. Simple fractures may be treated with a cast or splint to immobilize the wrist and allow for healing. More severe fractures may require surgical intervention, such as open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), to realign the bone and stabilize the wrist. In some cases, a scaphoid osteotomy may be performed, where the bone is cut and realigned to improve function and reduce the risk of future fractures.

Recovery from scafoidfraktur can vary depending on the severity of the injury and the treatment plan. Patients may experience pain, swelling, and limited range of motion in the wrist during the healing process. Physical therapy and gradual return to activity are often recommended to restore strength and function in the wrist. In some cases, patients may experience long-term complications, such as arthritis or chronic pain, if the fracture is not properly treated or if the bone does not heal correctly.
