Satelliittipaikanmääritysjärjestelmät, commonly known as satellite navigation systems, are constellations of satellites that provide autonomous geospatial positioning with global or regional coverage. These systems allow electronic receivers anywhere on or near the Earth to determine their location (latitude, longitude, and altitude) and their precise time. The most well-known example is the Global Positioning System (GPS) operated by the United States. Other major global systems include GLONASS (Russia), Galileo (European Union), and BeiDou (China). Regional systems also exist, such as QZSS (Japan) and IRNSS (India).

The fundamental principle behind these systems relies on trilateration. A receiver on the ground calculates its distance from multiple satellites based on the time it takes for signals to travel from the satellites to the receiver. By receiving signals from at least four satellites, the receiver can pinpoint its three-dimensional position and correct for clock errors. The satellites transmit precise timing information and their orbital data, allowing the receiver to perform these calculations.

Satellite navigation systems have revolutionized numerous fields. They are essential for transportation, including road, air, and maritime navigation.
