Sarnens

Sarnens is a fictional city and municipality in the western region of Valeron, located on the Sarth River. It has a population of roughly 12,000 and covers about 22 square kilometers. The city serves as the administrative center of the Sarnens District and acts as a local hub for commerce and culture.

Geography and climate: It lies in a temperate zone with rolling hills; the surrounding countryside includes orchards, hedged farms, and mixed forests. The Sarth River provides irrigation and historic trade routes. The climate is mild with cool winters and warm summers.

History and governance: Sarnens traces its origins to a 12th-century trading post. Market rights were granted in the early 13th century, spurring growth. It became a self-governing municipality in the 19th century and currently operates under a mayor-council system within the Valeron Federation. Local elections are held every four years.

Economy and culture: The economy combines small-scale manufacturing, especially textiles and wood products, with agriculture and services. Tourism centers on the historic core and riverside scenery. Residents are known as Sarnensians, and Sarnish is the local language variant. The city hosts the annual River Festival, and maintains several museums and galleries.

Landmarks and infrastructure: Notable sites include Sarnens Cathedral (Romanesque, circa 1200), the Old Mill, and the Sarth Bridge. Transportation relies on regional roads and bus services; there is no railway. Education includes a campus of Valeron State University offering programs in regional studies and engineering.
