The name "Saproamanita" reflects its saprotrophic lifestyle, meaning it obtains nutrients from dead organic matter, and its close evolutionary relationship to Amanita.

Species within Saproamanita are generally small to medium-sized mushrooms. They often feature a cap that can be convex to flattened, with a surface that may be smooth or slightly scaly. The gills are typically free from the stipe and are white to cream-colored. The stipe is usually slender and may have a ring, though it is often ephemeral or absent. A distinctive feature of some Saproamanita species is the presence of a volva at the base of the stipe, which is a cup-like or sac-like structure. The spore print is white.
