Saladin
Saladin, full name Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, was a Muslim military and political leader who lived from 1137 to 1193. Of Kurdish origin, he rose to become the first sultan of Egypt and Syria and founder of the Ayyubid Dynasty. He is renowned for uniting much of the Muslim Levant and for leading resistance against the Crusaders in the late 12th century.
Born in Tikrit, Saladin entered public service under his uncle Shirkuh and later under Nur al-Din Zangi.

Saladin died in Damascus in 1193 and was buried there. He left a lasting legacy as a
