SU-lån is the loan component of the Swedish state study support system, commonly known as SU. Administered by CSN (Centrala studiestödsnämnden), SU-lån is designed to help students cover living costs while pursuing approved higher education studies. It operates alongside grants and other allowances that make up the overall SU package.

Eligibility for SU-lån generally requires admission to an approved program at a university, university college, or certain vocational education courses, with study at least part-time. Applicants must meet CSN’s residence rules, meaning most Swedish residents are eligible, while some international students may qualify under specific conditions. The amount that can be borrowed depends on factors such as the level of study, whether the student lives at home or away from home, and the study intensity.

Terms and repayment: The loan accrues interest, with the rate set by CSN and linked to market rates. Interest begins to accrue once the loan is disbursed. Repayment typically starts after studies end or when the student takes a break from study, subject to a grace period. The repayment schedule is determined by CSN based on the loan balance and the borrower’s circumstances. In some cases, borrowers may be able to apply for repayment pauses or adjustments if income is low or life situations change.

Administration: CSN handles the application, disbursement, interest accrual and repayment of SU-lån.
