SHRMapproved

SHRMapproved is a certification mark used to indicate that a product, service, organization, or facility complies with the Safety, Health, and Risk Management Standards (SHRMS). The program is administered by the SHRMapproved Certification Council, a cross-industry body formed to harmonize risk-management practices and promote safety and resilience.

Criteria cover governance and policy, risk assessment, incident reporting and investigation, training and competence, contractor and supply-chain management, emergency preparedness, and continuous improvement. Certification is scoped to specific activities and geographic regions and may be issued for limited durations with required surveillance.

Process: Applicants submit documentation and complete a self-assessment, followed by an on-site audit by independent, accredited assessors. Non-conformities are categorized by severity; organizations must close corrective actions within defined timelines. The certificate is valid for a fixed period, typically two to three years, after which renewal audits are conducted.

Use and impact: The SHRMapproved mark signals baseline risk-management rigor to customers, investors, and regulators. It is commonly displayed on product packaging, websites, and marketing materials where the scope includes risk management outcomes. Some regions recognize the mark for procurement or compliance programs.

Criticism and limitations: As with other certification marks, SHRMapproved can incur substantial costs and administrative overhead, and some argue it overlaps with established standards such as ISO 45001. Its effectiveness depends on independent audits and ongoing compliance, not merely the certificate.
