SHRMCP stands for SHRM Certified Professional, a professional credential in human resources issued by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). It is part of SHRM’s Certification program, designed to recognize HR professionals who demonstrate a combination of knowledge, skills, and behavioral competencies needed to perform HR duties effectively in organizations.

The credential is grounded in the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (BoCK), which emphasizes three main domains: People, Organization, and Workplace, along with core HR competencies such as ethical practice, relationship management, consultation, critical evaluation, and HR technical knowledge. The SHRM-CP exam assesses both knowledge of HR concepts and the ability to apply them in workplace scenarios, using a mix of item types, including situational judgment questions. The exam is delivered computer-based at Pearson VUE testing centers worldwide, with results reported as pass or fail.

Eligibility for SHRM-CP is determined by SHRM through official guidance and typically depends on a combination of HR-related work experience and educational attainment. Prospective candidates may use SHRM’s eligibility tools to determine which route applies to them.

Recertification is required every three years to maintain the credential. This is achieved by earning SHRM-approved professional development credits (PDCs) through eligible activities such as conferences, webinars, and formal coursework, and by paying the renewal fee. SHRM-CP holders often pursue the credential to advance HR careers, meet employer expectations, or align with professional development goals. The certification is commonly compared with other HR credentials, and its recognition varies by region and industry.
