Särkymiskestävyyttä, also known as fracture toughness, is a property of a material that describes its resistance to crack propagation. It is a quantitative measure of the ability of a material containing a crack to withstand an applied load. A material with high fracture toughness can tolerate larger cracks or higher stress concentrations before fracturing than a material with low fracture toughness.

Fracture toughness is typically measured using standardized tests where a specimen with a pre-existing crack is subjected to a tensile load. The critical stress intensity factor, denoted as KIC, is the value of the stress intensity factor at which rapid crack growth occurs and fracture ensues. This value is dependent on the material's properties, the geometry of the crack, and the loading conditions, particularly temperature and strain rate.

Different materials exhibit varying degrees of särkymiskestävyyttä. Metals, especially certain alloys, generally possess higher fracture toughness compared to ceramics, which are typically brittle and have low fracture toughness. Polymers can have a wide range of fracture toughness depending on their molecular structure and processing.
