Råvarebasert refers to economic activities, industries, or strategies that are heavily reliant on the extraction, processing, or export of raw materials. These raw materials can include natural resources such as minerals, agricultural products, timber, and fossil fuels. Countries or regions with abundant natural resources often develop a significant portion of their economy around these commodities.

The nature of a råvarebasert economy can vary. In some cases, it might involve primary extraction with little to no further processing, leading to the export of raw commodities. In other instances, it can encompass the initial stages of manufacturing or refining these raw materials before they are used in more complex production chains or exported as semi-finished goods.

A reliance on råvarebasert activities can offer certain economic advantages, such as the potential for substantial export revenues and job creation in resource-rich areas. However, it also presents challenges. Economies heavily dependent on raw materials are often susceptible to price volatility in global commodity markets, which can lead to economic instability. Furthermore, over-reliance on raw material exports can sometimes hinder diversification into higher-value-added industries, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as the "resource curse." Sustainable management of these resources is also a critical consideration for long-term economic viability and environmental protection.
