Rundtische

Rundtische is the plural form of Rundtisch, a German term that can refer to both a type of furniture and a political format. In furniture usage, a Rundtisch is a round table with a circular top supported by a central pedestal or legs. Round tables are common in dining rooms, cafés, and meeting spaces because of their symmetrical shape and social advantages. They come in a range of diameters—from compact coffee-table sizes to large banquet tables—and in heights appropriate for dining, counter seating, or conference settings. Materials include solid wood, veneer, glass, and metal, with finishes from light to dark. Design variations emphasize legroom, stability, and aesthetics, and some models include extending leaves to increase surface area when needed.

Notable historical applications occurred in the late 1980s in Eastern Europe, most prominently the East German Runder Tisch talks (1989–1990) and the Polish Round Table Talks (1989). While the format can foster dialogue and compromise, its effectiveness depends on broader political conditions and follow-up actions.
