Rubberlining

Rubberlining is the process of applying a rubber-based lining to the interior surface of metallic vessels, ducts, tanks, and pipes to provide chemical resistance, abrasion protection, and sometimes thermal insulation. The lining creates a seamless barrier between the contained medium and the substrate, reducing corrosion and wear.

Common elastomers used for rubber linings include natural rubber, neoprene (polychloroprene), nitrile rubber (NBR), EPDM, and styrene-butadiene rubber. Selection depends on chemical compatibility, temperature, and mechanical demands. For example, EPDM is often chosen for water, steam, and a wide range of acids and bases; nitrile suits hydrocarbons and oils; neoprene offers good chemical resistance and durability in weathering and some solvents; natural rubber provides elasticity but has more limited chemical resistance.

Applications for rubber linings are wide and include chemical processing equipment, mining and mineral processing, pulp and paper, water and wastewater treatment, oil and gas processing, and food and beverage equipment where approved, as well as storage tanks and pipelines. The lining is used to protect steel and other substrates from corrosive or abrasive contained media and to extend service life.

Installation methods vary. Linings may be supplied as sheets bonded to the substrate with specialty adhesives and sometimes heat or vulcanization to form a seamless lining. Alternatives include sheet lining joined in place, or, in select cases, spray-on or pourable elastomer linings. Joints are sealed, edges trimmed, and the lining is tested for integrity.

Durability depends on media aggressiveness, temperature, and mechanical wear. Limitations include the temperature rating of the elastomer and potential delamination if bonding is improper. Regular inspection for wear, blisters, or pinholes is recommended, with relining as needed.
