Rollerblading

Rollerblading refers to inline skating, the activity of gliding on inline skates with wheels arranged in a single line. It is commonly used to describe inline skating in general, though the term is also associated with the Rollerblade brand. Inline skating is practiced for recreation, fitness, transportation, and sport, and it contrasts with traditional quad skates that have two wheels side by side.

The modern popularization of inline skates began in the 1980s with manufacturers like Rollerblade, Inc., which helped establish standardized designs and safety gear. The activity spread during the 1990s to North America and Europe, supporting a range of disciplines and increasingly accessible recreational use. Today, inline skating encompasses casual cruising as well as numerous specialized forms.

Equipment includes a boot, a frame, axles, wheels, and bearings. Wheel sizes and hardness vary by use: beginner and freestyle setups often use 72–80 mm wheels; speed and fitness models commonly use larger wheels in the 90–110 mm range with harder durometers. Braking is usually achieved with a heel brake on the right skate, though some aggressive or stunt-oriented skates omit brakes. Protective gear is strongly advised and commonly includes a helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads. Maintenance involves cleaning and lubricating bearings, rotating or replacing worn wheels, and inspecting the frame and trucks.

Techniques center on balance and control: a stable stance with knees bent and weight centered, forward propulsion through a rolling stride, and turning by carving. Stopping methods include the heel brake, T-stop, and power slides. Advanced skating such as aggressive tricks or speed events requires specialized equipment and practice, often in dedicated parks or rinks.

Safety and local regulations vary; wearing protective gear, skating on suitable surfaces, and observing traffic rules are recommended to reduce injury risk.
