Roller coasters are amusement rides that consist of a track and a train. The ride relies largely on gravity and momentum to produce speed and thrill, typically involving drops, sharp curves, and sometimes inversions. Rides may be powered initially by a lift hill or a launched system, after which gravity carries the train along the course. Tracks are commonly wooden or steel, with each material yielding distinct ride characteristics.

Origins trace to thrill rides in the 17th–19th centuries, with early wooden slides in Europe and Russia. The modern roller coaster matured in the United States in the late 1800s; the Gravity Switchback Railway, opened in 1884 on Coney Island, is often cited as the first coaster of the genre. Wooden coasters dominated early decades, followed by the advent of steel tracks in the mid-20th century, enabling smoother rides and inversions.

Design and operation involve several systems to ensure safety and reliability. Key components include the track, trains, wheels, restraint devices, and braking systems. Modern coasters use block signaling, computer control, and magnetic or friction braking. Restraints may be lap bars, shoulder harnesses, or combination systems. Regular maintenance, inspections, and adherence to safety standards are required by authorities and operators.

Coasters are categorized by material (wooden, steel, hybrid), train configuration (stand-up, sit-down, inverted, floorless, suspended), and propulsion method (lift-hill, launched). They range from family-friendly to extreme thrill rides and may feature inversions, high speeds, and significant g-forces. Contemporary designs emphasize ride smoothness, reliability, and safety, as well as integration with theme and ride experience in parks worldwide.
