Rohschnitt

Rohschnitt, literally “rough cut,” refers to an early edit of a film or video created after principal photography. It assembles the shot material in approximate sequence to establish the narrative arc, pacing, and performances. The Rohschnitt typically uses placeholder audio, temporary music, and rough transitions, and it is not intended to be the final sound mix, color grade, or visual effects.

In practice, the Rohschnitt is produced by the editor in collaboration with the director and producers. It involves selecting takes, ordering scenes, trimming timings, and sometimes removing or reorganizing material. The goal is to test the story’s structure and rhythm, identify problem areas, and communicate potential changes to the team. The process relies on editing software and can include multiple iterations as feedback is gathered.

The Rohschnitt differs from the Feinschnitt (fine cut) and the final cut. The Feinschnitt refines pacing, transitions, and performance within tighter timing, while sound design, color grading, and visual effects remain minimal or provisional in the rough version. Usually the Rohschnitt is screened for stakeholders to guide decisions about further shooting, reshoots, or additional editing. It is considered a working tool in postproduction, continuously updated as new material or responses emerge.

In documentary and television contexts, the rough cut often helps shape the storytelling approach and identify which sequences best convey the intended message. While its specifics can vary by production, the Rohschnitt remains a foundational step that informs subsequent refinements toward the finished film.
