Robotsautonomous is a term used to describe autonomous robots, which are machines capable of performing tasks without direct human control, using onboard sensors, computation, and actuators to perceive their environment, make decisions, and execute actions. They combine perception, localization, mapping, planning, and control to operate in dynamic environments. Perception gathers data through cameras, lidar, radar, and tactile sensors; localization and mapping estimate position and build environmental models; planning determines sequences of actions; control converts plans into motor commands. Many autonomous systems rely on artificial intelligence and machine learning to interpret sensory data and adapt to new tasks.

Autonomy levels range from assistive to fully autonomous. Fully autonomous robots can operate independently across defined tasks and environments, while semi-autonomous systems require supervision or override capability.

Applications include manufacturing and logistics with robotic arms and autonomous mobile manipulators; service robots for homes and offices; agriculture for crop monitoring and precision farming; healthcare devices that assist surgeons or deliver supplies; exploration and inspection robots for dangerous or remote environments.

Safety, ethics, and governance are central concerns. Systems must be fail-safe, robust to sensor failures, and secure against cyber threats. Accountability for autonomous decisions, privacy of data collected, and potential impacts on employment are debated issues. Regulatory frameworks and safety standards are evolving to address liability and transparency.

Challenges include perception under clutter, resilience to changing conditions, energy efficiency, scalability, and ensuring explainability of AI decisions. The future direction includes closer human-robot collaboration, swarm robotics, and integration with cloud and edge computing.
