Roadbuilders are workers and professionals involved in the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of road networks and associated infrastructure. The field includes civil engineers, surveyors, inspectors, foremen, machine operators, and laborers who work together to plan, design, and build roadways. The tasks span site assessment, earthworks, drainage, pavement design and construction, surface treatments, signage, guardrails, lighting, and ongoing maintenance such as resurfacing, crack sealing, and pothole filling. Roadbuilders may work on highways, regional and local streets, rural roads, bike lanes, sidewalks, and related structures such as bridges and culverts.

Construction processes typically proceed from feasibility and design through procurement, mobilization, earthmoving, subgrade preparation, pavement installation, compaction, finishing, and curing. Techniques depend on climate, traffic, and material availability; common pavement types include asphalt concrete, Portland cement concrete, and composite or recycled material solutions such as asphalt recycled pavement. Equipment used includes bulldozers, graders, compactors, asphalt pavers, milling machines, and trucks for material transport. Safety and regulatory compliance are integral, with traffic management plans, site supervision, and adherence to occupational health standards.

Roadbuilding affects economic development by facilitating trade and mobility while presenting environmental and social considerations, such as emissions, noise, land use, and runoff. Modern practice emphasizes durability, efficiency, and lifecycle cost, with ongoing research in materials science, recycled contents, and sustainable construction methods. The term covers both new road construction and long-term maintenance programs carried out by public agencies, private contractors, or public–private partnerships.
