Ristikko

Ristikko is a Finnish term commonly used to refer to a crossword puzzle. In Finnish usage it is often synonymous with sanaristikko, the standard term for crosswords, though ristikko may be heard in everyday speech or in certain contexts. A ristikko consists of a grid with white and black squares and a set of clues corresponding to words to be placed horizontally (across) and vertically (down). The starting position of each answer is numbered, and the same letters intersect in the grid where across and down answers meet.

The typical solving process involves filling in words that fit both the clue and the available crossing letters. Clues can be straightforward definitions, synonyms, or wordplay elements; in some variants, they may use more elaborate devices such as homophones or abbreviations. Some crosswords are thematic, with a set of clues connected by a common idea, while others are non-thematic.
