Rintasyöpätyypit refers to the different classifications of breast cancer. These classifications are crucial for determining the best course of treatment and predicting the prognosis. The most common broad categories are non-invasive and invasive breast cancers.

Non-invasive breast cancer, also known as carcinoma in situ, means the cancer cells are confined to the milk ducts or lobules and have not spread to surrounding breast tissue. The two main types of non-invasive breast cancer are ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS). DCIS is considered a pre-cancerous condition and has the potential to develop into invasive cancer. LCIS is less common and is often considered a marker for increased breast cancer risk rather than a true cancer itself.

Invasive breast cancer, on the other hand, means that the cancer cells have broken through the wall of the milk duct or lobule and have invaded the surrounding breast tissue. From here, they can potentially spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or bloodstream. The most common type of invasive breast cancer is invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), which originates in the milk ducts. Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) originates in the lobules.

Other less common types of breast cancer include inflammatory breast cancer, Paget's disease of the nipple, and specific subtypes like HER2-positive or triple-negative breast cancer, which are defined by the presence or absence of certain proteins or genetic markers on the cancer cells. These markers significantly influence treatment decisions, as targeted therapies can be used for specific subtypes. Understanding the specific type of breast cancer is essential for personalized medicine and effective management.
