It is not an established school with a single agreed theory, but a way of talking about deontology that foregrounds “rightness” over other evaluative standards.

In this frame, actions are right if they fulfill duties or conform to universal rules, irrespective of their consequences. Rightness is grounded in rational agency, the intrinsic authority of moral laws, and the rights and duties that bind agents. The method emphasizes rule-following, consistency, and respect for autonomy.

Rightnessdeontology is often associated with Kantian themes—the primacy of rational maxims and universalizable norms—but the label indicates a focus on the evaluative status of actions as rightness rather than the broader coherence of a system. Some proponents stress rights, others duties, but the shared claim is that right action is determined by normative status rather than outcomes.

Critics argue that a strict rightness focus can be inflexible in conflict situations and may ignore beneficial consequences or moral luck. Debates center on how to resolve duty conflicts, how to weigh competing rights, and whether rightness alone suffices for moral justification.
