Revelstoke

Revelstoke is a city located in the Columbia Mountains of southeastern British Columbia, Canada. It is situated on the western shore of the Columbia River, approximately 215 kilometers (134 miles) northeast of Kelowna and 200 kilometers (124 miles) west of Calgary, Alberta. The city is a major service center for the surrounding region, which is known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Historically, Revelstoke was established in the late 19th century as a railway town. The Canadian Pacific Railway played a crucial role in its development, choosing the location for a divisional point and tunnel construction. The city's name is believed to be derived from a local estate owned by Edward, the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, whose son was a railway official. Logging and mining also contributed to the early economy.

Today, Revelstoke is widely recognized as a year-round tourist destination. In the winter, it is a popular hub for skiing and snowboarding, particularly due to Revelstoke Mountain Resort, which boasts some of the highest vertical in North America. The surrounding backcountry offers extensive opportunities for snowmobiling, heli-skiing, and backcountry touring. During the summer months, activities such as hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and fishing in the nearby national parks and waterways become prominent.

The city's economy is diversified, with tourism, forestry, and transportation playing significant roles.
