Edgcumbe is a small village and civil parish located in the unitary authority of Plymouth, Devon, England. Situated approximately 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Plymouth city centre, it lies within the historic county boundaries of Devon and Cornwall. The village is primarily known for its association with the Edgcumbe family, a prominent Cornish aristocratic lineage that has played a significant role in the region’s history.

The Edgcumbe family’s influence dates back to the 13th century, with members holding various political and military positions. One of the most notable figures was Admiral Sir William Cornwallis, who served as First Lord of the Admiralty and was instrumental in the defeat of the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. The family’s legacy is further tied to the construction of Edgcumbe Hall, a grand Georgian mansion completed in 1789, which remains a prominent landmark in the area. The hall was designed by architect Henry Holland and is surrounded by extensive gardens and parkland, including the Edgcumbe Park, a popular recreational space.
