Renderöintitekniikka, commonly known as rendering technology, refers to the process by which a computer system generates a digital image from a 2D or 3D model. This process is fundamental in computer graphics, enabling the creation of realistic or stylized visuals for various applications.

The core of rendering involves algorithms that simulate the interaction of light with surfaces. This includes calculations for color, brightness, shadows, reflections, and refractions. Different rendering techniques exist, ranging from simple methods like flat shading to complex ones like ray tracing and path tracing. Flat shading, for instance, assigns a single color to each polygon, resulting in a faceted appearance. Gouraud shading and Phong shading offer smoother transitions by interpolating colors across polygons.

More advanced techniques aim for photorealism. Ray tracing simulates the path of individual light rays as they bounce off surfaces and enter the virtual camera, accurately modeling reflections and refractions. Path tracing is an extension of ray tracing that traces multiple light paths, leading to more complex global illumination effects and a higher degree of realism, though it is computationally intensive.

Real-time rendering, used in video games and interactive applications, prioritizes speed over absolute accuracy, employing techniques like rasterization. Rasterization converts 3D geometry into 2D pixels on the screen. Non-real-time rendering, often used in film production and architectural visualization, can afford to take more time to produce highly detailed and photorealistic images. The choice of rendering technique depends heavily on the desired visual quality, performance requirements, and available computational resources.
