Registerkarte

Registerkarte is a German term meaning “tab,” a user interface element that allows multiple pages or views to be placed within the same window or area. In computer software, a Registerkarte functions as a clickable label that displays its associated content when selected and hides it otherwise, thereby maximizing screen real estate and improving navigation efficiency. The concept originated in the early days of graphical user interfaces as a way to emulate physical paper tabs, and it has since become a standard component in web browsers, office suites, file explorers, development environments, and many other applications.

Common characteristics of a Registerkarte include a horizontal or vertical strip of labeled rectangles, a selected state that often uses a distinct color or shading, and support for adding, closing, reordering, or grouping tabs via drag‑and‑drop or context menus. Many systems provide programmable APIs that allow developers to customize icons, titles, persistence, and the behavior of tabbed panels. In mobile contexts, Registerkarte may appear at the bottom of the screen as a navigation bar, where the labels are often accompanied by icons.

Because the Registerkarte allows users to maintain multiple contexts simultaneously, it is widely adopted for workflows that require quick switching, such as web browsing, code editing, or data analysis. The term is used interchangeably with “Tab” in German‑language documentation, although the English name is sometimes adopted in bilingual user interfaces and programming libraries.
