Regaine

Regaine is a brand name for a topical minoxidil product used to treat hereditary hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, in men and women. It is marketed in many countries under the Regaine label and is available in liquid solution and foam forms. In some markets, a similar formulation is sold under the brand name Rogaine.

The active ingredient, minoxidil, was originally developed as an oral medication for high blood pressure, but a topical form was found to promote hair growth. The exact mechanism by which minoxidil stimulates regrowth is not fully understood; it is believed to dilate scalp blood vessels, prolong the growth (anagen) phase of hair follicles, and help enlarge miniaturized follicles to produce thicker hair shafts.

Usage typically involves applying the product to the dry scalp twice daily. Strengths commonly available are 2% for women and 5% for men, with foam formulations often preferred for ease of application. Results vary; some users experience new hair growth or thickening, particularly at the crown, while others may notice little or no improvement. Visible effects generally appear after several months of consistent use, and continued treatment is usually required to maintain benefits.

Side effects are usually limited to the scalp and may include itching, redness, or irritation. Less commonly, dermatitis can occur. Systemic side effects are rare due to limited absorption and require medical attention if they occur. Regaine is not recommended for use by pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, children, or on broken or irritated skin without medical advice. It is not a cure for hair loss, and discontinuation often leads to loss of any regrown hair.
